Pet Dental Treatment in Carlisle, Cumbria

Pet Dental Services

Dental disease is incredibly common in adult dogs and cats; it affects over 70% of adult cats and 90% of adult dogs!  Dental disease means more than tolerating a bit of bad breath – it can cause very real discomfort for your pet, and present dangerous amounts of bacteria to their bloodstream.

Coomara vets and nurses are here to help treat and prevent dental disease in your pet.  Our vets will check your pet’s mouth at every health check, and our nurses run dental health clinics too.

We offer dental scale and polishes, and dental extraction where disease is more advanced.

Our nurses advise on preventative hygiene measures to try to prevent further dental problems, helping you to navigate the myriad of products available for your pet.

Members of our Coomara Care preventative healthcare plan benefit from 10% off dental procedures, and unlimited free of charge nurse consultations to help with dental checks and dental health advice.

Pet Weight Management Centre in Carlisle, Cumbria

Weight Management Centre

Obesity in pets is a common problem – 59% of dogs and 39% of cats in the UK are overweight.  Just as in people this can cause some very real health risks including arthritis, heart disease, Diabetes and cancers.  On average obesity takes 3-5 years off your pet’s life.

Coomara is an approved  weight management centre – in our nurse weight clinic our qualified “weight ambassadors” body condition score your pet (a bit like doing a BMI in people) and provide you with tailor made treatment and support, so that they may lose weight safety and effectively.  They will be with your and your pet all the way to their weight target and beyond.

Members of our Coomara Care preventative healthcare plan benefit from unlimited free of charge nurse clinics, which would include weight management clinics.  They also receive 10% off Royal Canin prescription foods that may be used as part of a weight loss programme.

Parasite Treatment for Fleas and Worms in Carlisle, Cumbria

Parasite Treatments - Fleas and Worms

Common pet parasites can cause great discomfort to your pet and on occasion serious disease.  We believe that prevention is always better than cure.  At Coomara we stock a range of parasite treatment products that are “prescription strength”.  We have found that over-the-counter products available in ordinary stores are usually not good enough to control internal and external parasites.

We offer an option for oral or topical treatments.

Our Coomara Care preventative healthcare plan is a great way to save money on, and keep on top of, regular parasite treatments for dogs and cats.  We provide you with all the products you need, a handy bespoke fridge planner for your home and text reminders for check-ups.

Pet Microchipping in Carlisle, Cumbria

Microchipping

Microchips are devices about the size of a grain of rice that hold a unique identification number for your pet.  This number is registered on a national database alongside your contact details, so that you and your pet may be reunited if they become lost or found.

Microchipping for dogs became compulsory by law in April 2016.

As of 10th June 2024 it will be a legal requirement for all cats to be microchipped. We are encouraging owners to come in as soon as possible to have this done – cats like to roam, and the microchip provides such peace of mind.

Members of our Coomara Care plan benefit from a 10% discount on microchipping.

Pet Travel Support in Carlisle, Cumbria

Pet Travel

Our vets are able to advise you on aspects of pet travel and are able to issue Animal Health Certificates (AHCs).  AHCs are required for travel to the EU and Northern Ireland, and replace the old Pet Passport Scheme.  We are also able to advise and facilitate travel to countries beyond the EU.

Following the UK’s exit from the EU, conditions for pet travel are subject to change at short notice; we strongly advise that anyone wishing to travel with their pet to allow plenty of preparation time and contact the surgery and speak to one of our vets at the earliest opportunity.

24hr Vet Care

Coomara covers its own out of hours service – After 7pm on weeknights, and after 12pm on Saturdays your emergency call will be answered by a dedicated call handling team.  They will immediately page our duty vet who will contact you to arrange an emergency consultation at Coomara if necessary.  You will never be asked to travel to another Practice, and the vet on call will have free access to your pet’s history.

If necessary your pet may need to be admitted to our hospital.  We are a general practice rather than a hospital, so do not have a dedicated night team on the premises at all times, but our duty vet and nurse will attend to inpatients as frequently as indicated by their condition.  They will receive the care that they need.  We aim to update you at least twice daily throughout their stay, and we will arrange visiting times around you.
