KENNEL COUGH OUTBREAK
We have seen a considerable number of cases of 'kennel cough' this summer. Contrary to popular belief this disease is not only caught in boarding kennels but is highly contagious and can be caught from other dogs when out & about.
'Kennel cough' (or infectious tracheobronchitis) is a severe hacking cough and can sound like something is stuck in their throat. Like the common cold in humans - direct treatment is difficult. Antibiotics can help, but dogs can cough for upto 2 weeks even with treatment.
To help prevent 'kennel cough' there is a VACCINE !
Immunity protection starts from 72 hours after the vaccine and only dose is needed. This vaccine can reduce the severity of the cough.
Cost for each dog is £20.00 incl VAT & this vaccine lasts one year.

Even reptiles, birds & snakes can be done. By microchipping your pets you have the best possible chance of being re-united if they stray or are stolen. Microchipping is now only £15

DIABETES MONTH
Unfortunately, like people, pets can develop diabetes (sugar diabetes - full name diabetes mellitus) and the problem is growing. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 200 pets suffer from the condition. Like us, it can often be associated with getting older, putting on weight and not being active. If left untreated, diabetes can cause serious illness in your pet and even premature death. However, once diagnosed, diabetes in cats and dogs is usually relatively easy to treat and manage.
We are offering FREE diabetes checks for your pet. You don't need to bring your pet in - just pick up a leaflet in the waiting room.
For more information see the website www.petdiabetesmonth.co.uk
FIREWORK PHOBIA
Now is the time to start thinking about helping your pet get through the 'firework season'. The sooner you start the better the result. There is a wide variety of advice we can offer. Please phone & ask for us to help with your pet's requirements.
PARVO OUTBREAK
The practice has seen a sudden increase in the number of cases of Parvo virus affecting puppies. Parvo is not a disease that is usually seen in the Carlisle area but in the last week we have seen 4 case of parvo in young puppies. At present these are all recovering.
Parvo disease usually shows as acute vomiting and diarrhoea with blood in both and the dog is usually very depressed. Treatment usually involves hospitalisation and fluid therapy by intra-venous drip.
Please ensure that your dogs are up to date for their Parvo vaccination and have had a booster in the last year. Keep young puppies confined until they are fully vaccinated.
AUGUST 2010
FLEAS
Summer months are always a time when the flea population increases and the chance of your pet becoming infected is greater. Fleas do not live all the time on animals, but spend the majority of their life in the environment just using your pet as a fast food outlet. For every flea you find on an animal that has a long term infection they reckon that there are up to 100 more in the environment.
To prevent your pet becoming infected and to stop your house getting infested you need to keep your pet permenantly protected from infection.
We reccommend that you treat your pet every other month with Effipro spot on.
Cost of treatment is from £3.96 for cats and dogs from £4.89 with treatments available in singles.
